Languages express meaning in different ways. In French, bonjour is a daytime greeting, merci means thank you, and au revoir means goodbye. Use these in a simple exchange. Written forms do not show every detail of pronunciation, so practise with a reliable spoken model and an adult.

Try it: Create a polite greeting exchange with an adult.

The French words un, deux, trois, quatre and cinq represent one to five. Match meaning to a quantity rather than only memorising order. Count each object once and check the total. Listen to a reliable model when practising aloud.

Try it: Match five number cards to small groups of objects.

Rouge means red, bleu means blue, vert means green and jaune means yellow. French describing words can change form depending on the noun; this lesson first practises recognising the basic colour words. Do not assume every word order matches English.

Try it: Make a labelled colour chart using safe materials.

French nouns have grammatical gender. Un and une can mean a or an. Learn the article with the noun: un livre means a book; une pomme means an apple. Grammatical gender is a feature of language, not a claim that an object is a person.

Try it: Create two illustrated noun-and-article cards.

Je m’appelle means my name is. You can practise with an invented character name. Comment tu t’appelles? asks someone’s name in an informal singular exchange. Language practice should not require sharing real personal details online.

Try it: Role-play an introduction using invented names.

J’aime means I like and je n’aime pas means I do not like. In this example, J’aime les pommes means I like apples. Negation changes the meaning. People can have different preferences without either being wrong.

Try it: Make two fictional preference sentences from a reliable model.

French descriptions connect nouns with appropriate describing words. Word order and agreement may differ from English. For this model, un livre bleu means a blue book, and une pomme verte means a green apple. Learn and compare the complete examples.

Try it: Compare two model noun phrases and illustrate their meanings.

Use known words, context and sentence structure to understand a short message. Do not guess every unknown word as fact. Check a reliable dictionary or adult guidance and distinguish a confident meaning from a tentative inference.

Try it: Read a short model message and mark known and uncertain words.

Prepare a short exchange with a greeting, introduction, question or preference and a polite ending. Use accurate models and revise after feedback. Language learning includes listening and cultural curiosity; a short written pathway is a starting sequence, not fluency certification.

Try it: Create and practise a short exchange with an adult or suitable teacher.

Learning together

Each chapter brings together teaching, an example, practice and a practical discovery. Use the material with discussion and suitable offline activities. Choose a comfortable starting point and revisit explanations as needed.
