Migration can involve many motives and different kinds of movement. Early medieval Britain saw settlement, conflict and exchange among diverse groups, including Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. Labels simplify complicated histories; they do not describe identical lives or fixed identities.
Try it: Compare evidence for two forms of contact between communities.
World history includes many societies with their own writing, knowledge, technologies and institutions. Maya societies developed in parts of Mesoamerica; Maya peoples and languages continue today. Indigenous histories should be studied through appropriate sources, including community voices, without treating diverse peoples as one group.
Try it: Choose an appropriate museum or community resource and distinguish past events from continuing culture.
Medieval societies were varied across regions and centuries. Farming, craft work, trade and religious institutions shaped many communities. Social position affected opportunities and obligations. A castle alone cannot represent everyone’s life.
Try it: Investigate two occupations in a studied medieval community.
Maya societies developed cities, writing, calendars and specialised knowledge in parts of Mesoamerica. They were not one unchanging society. Maya peoples and cultures continue today. Ancient remains should be studied alongside reliable contextual information and respect for living communities.
Try it: Use a museum resource to study one Maya achievement.
Trade routes carried goods and also connected ideas, skills and people. Learning developed through contributions from many societies. Exchange could involve cooperation and unequal power. Trace specific evidence rather than crediting all knowledge to one place.
Try it: Trace one well-documented exchange using a reliable museum or library source.
The historical Kingdom of Benin was centred in present-day Nigeria. Its artists created works including cast brass plaques associated with the royal court. Many objects were looted during the British attack in 1897. Their histories include creation, removal and continuing debates about return.
Try it: Study one museum object’s creation and collection history with an adult.
Indigenous peoples have diverse histories, knowledge and continuing cultures. They are not only people of the distant past. Use sources that include community voices and respect limits on cultural knowledge. Do not copy restricted traditions or assume one community represents all others.
Try it: Explore an authorised public community or museum resource respectfully.
Migration means moving to live elsewhere. Colonisation involves establishing control over another territory and its people. Experiences differ between newcomers and existing communities. Study effects including displacement and resistance without treating one viewpoint as the whole story.
Try it: Compare two suitable accounts with adult guidance.
An interpretation is an explanation of the past based on evidence and questions. Sources survive unevenly, so some voices are less visible. Ask whose experience is represented and what is missing. New evidence can change an interpretation.
Try it: Write an interpretation and name one missing perspective.
