An art investigation explores a question through research, observation and making. Record sources and experiments. Select techniques for a reason and refine them. The final work should connect with the investigation, while your explanation can acknowledge unexpected discoveries.
Try it: Complete a small investigation using observation, two experiments and a final response.
Visual language includes line, tone, colour, form, space and composition. Refinement means making deliberate adjustments that support the intention. Compare details and the whole image. Technical control serves communication; it does not require every artist to use the same style.
Try it: Refine one section of an artwork and explain its effect on the whole.
An exhibition arranges work for an audience. Labels can explain intention, process and sources without dictating every interpretation. Consider visibility and accessibility. Credit inspirations and collaborators, and distinguish your original contribution from resources created by others.
Try it: Plan a small exhibition with clear labels and accessible viewing.
A composition can develop motifs through repetition, contrast and variation. Plan the relationship between sections and choose how the ending connects to the opening. Notation may be conventional, graphic or a clear combination that performers understand.
Try it: Compose a short structured piece and provide a clear performance plan.
Careful listening notices musical evidence such as instruments, texture, rhythm and structure. Context can help explain a piece, but avoid stereotypes about a whole culture from one example. Describe observations before giving a personal response.
Try it: With an adult, compare two suitable recordings from reliable sources.
Production combines creative work with planning. Roles may include performing, arranging, designing or introducing. Agree on cues, space and access needs. Rehearse transitions and have a simple plan for mistakes. Everyone’s contribution can matter without everyone doing the same task.
Try it: Plan a short inclusive performance with roles and clear cues.
A complete design process connects research, criteria, prototypes, making and evaluation. Test the function and explain limitations. A design can meet some criteria better than others, so decisions involve trade-offs. Keep a record of why changes were made.
Try it: Complete a small safe design project with criteria and a test record.
A product’s lifecycle includes obtaining materials, making, use and what happens afterwards. Consider durability, maintenance, reuse and disposal. Claims such as environmentally friendly need evidence and context. Compare realistic alternatives rather than assuming a single label settles the question.
Try it: Compare two product ideas across their lifecycles using an adult’s help.
A portfolio selects work and explains development. Include experiments, revisions and a final piece, rather than only polished results. Reflect on strengths and a realistic next step. Respect others’ privacy and permissions when sharing photographs, recordings or collaborative work.
Try it: Create a small portfolio with three pieces of evidence and a reflection.
Learning together
Each chapter brings together teaching, an example, practice and a practical discovery. Use the material with discussion and suitable offline activities. Choose a comfortable starting point and revisit explanations as needed.
