Chapters to explore

Industrial and social changes affected work, transport, cities and daily life. Benefits and harms were distributed unevenly. Rights and participation expanded through complex struggles, and progress was not identical everywhere. Compare different groups’ experiences using evidence.

Try it: Investigate a local or national change through at least two perspectives.

A historical enquiry begins with a focused question. Sources must be considered in context: who made them, when, why and for whom. Corroborate claims where possible. Explain cause, consequence, change and continuity without pretending uncertain evidence is complete.

Try it: Produce a short enquiry with a claim, supporting sources, alternative interpretation and acknowledged limit.

Industrialisation changed production through machinery, energy systems and new organisation of work. Change was uneven and often brought harsh conditions as well as new goods and opportunities. Consider workers, owners and communities rather than only inventions.

Try it: Compare two perspectives on an industrial change.

Rights and political participation changed through campaigns, conflict and reform. Change was often gradual and incomplete. Individuals mattered, but organisations and wider conditions mattered too. Use a specific place and period rather than assuming one national history applies everywhere.

Try it: Investigate an age-appropriate reform using reliable sources.

Conflict affects civilians as well as combatants. An armistice stops fighting under agreed terms; it is not automatically a complete peace settlement. Remembrance practices reflect choices about what and whom to remember. Study respectfully without graphic material.

Try it: Study a public memorial’s purpose with an adult.

Empires involved unequal power and control over territories. Colonised peoples responded in varied ways, including resistance and movements for independence. Consequences continued after formal political changes. Include evidence from affected communities and avoid presenting conquest as a simple adventure.

Try it: Compare suitable sources about one studied independence movement.

National histories include many groups and movements of people. Reasons for migration can include work, family, safety or forced displacement. Avoid assuming all migrants share one experience. Compare personal accounts with wider records while respecting privacy.

Try it: Use published age-appropriate accounts to compare experiences respectfully.

Historical events usually have several causes, including long-term conditions and immediate triggers. Consequences can be intended or unintended. A turning point is an interpretation about important change, so explain for whom and in what way it mattered.

Try it: Make a cause-and-consequence diagram for a studied event.

A history enquiry asks a focused question, selects sources and builds a reasoned answer. Evaluate origin, purpose and context. Distinguish evidence from inference and explain uncertainty. Credit sources and revise the conclusion if stronger evidence appears.

Try it: Complete a short enquiry with an adult and include a source list.

Learning together

Each chapter brings together teaching, an example, practice and a practical discovery. Use the material with discussion and suitable offline activities. Choose a comfortable starting point and revisit explanations as needed.
