Year 6 Science

Explore science in Year 6 with Gina: classification and microorganisms, circulation and healthy bodies, inheritance, variation and evolution, and more.

Chapters to explore

Living things can be grouped using shared characteristics. Classification becomes more detailed as features are compared. Microorganisms are too small to see clearly without magnification; some are useful and some can cause disease. Not all microorganisms belong to the same group.

Try it: Build a classification chart using reliable sources. Do not grow unknown microbes.

The circulatory system includes the heart, blood and blood vessels. The heart pumps blood. Blood carries substances including oxygen and nutrients, and transports waste substances. The lungs exchange gases with the blood. Body systems work together.

Try it: Label a simple circulation model and explain how the heart, lungs and blood work together.

Offspring inherit characteristics from their parents, but are not usually identical. Variation exists within populations. Over generations, inherited characteristics that affect survival and reproduction can become more or less common. Individuals do not choose to evolve because they need a feature.

Try it: Use an imaginary population model to explain variation without claiming that evolution has a goal.

Light travels in straight lines in a uniform medium. We see when light enters our eyes. Reflective surfaces change the direction of light. Shadows have shapes related to the objects blocking the light. A diagram should show arrow directions accurately.

Try it: Draw a torch–mirror–eye ray diagram with arrows showing the path of light.

Circuit symbols let people communicate a design clearly. A complete conducting loop is needed for a simple circuit. Changing the number of suitable cells or components can affect a circuit’s behaviour. Use only low-voltage equipment and stay within component ratings.

Try it: Plan a safe circuit comparison on paper and explain which variable changes.

Good enquiry includes clear questions, suitable methods, repeated measurements where useful, and honest records. Results may contain uncertainty. A correlation does not by itself establish causation. Explain how the method could be improved and what further evidence would help.

Try it: Evaluate an earlier investigation and propose one justified improvement.

Individuals of a species vary. Some characteristics are influenced by inherited information, some by environment, and many by both. Evolution concerns changes in populations across generations, not an individual choosing a useful feature. Avoid drawing conclusions about a person from appearance.

Try it: Explain a plant variation example using more than one possible influence.

Light travels in straight lines in a uniform medium. We see an object when light from it or reflected by it enters our eyes. Mirrors change light’s direction through reflection. A ray diagram is a model, not a visible solid line in space.

Try it: Draw a source-object-eye light path.

Scientific explanations are judged against evidence and can be revised. Measurements have limits and results may vary. Repeated observations and suitable comparisons strengthen a conclusion, but do not justify claims beyond the study. Explain uncertainty clearly rather than hiding it.

Try it: Write a conclusion with evidence and one limitation.

Learning together

Each chapter brings together teaching, an example, practice and a practical discovery. Use the material with discussion and suitable offline activities. Choose a comfortable starting point and revisit explanations as needed.
